HOW HAS OUR EMS PROGRESSED? • NOAA had done a lot over the years to protect the environment and provide a safe workplace, but it was time to improve our management practices. • We began by identifying and understanding more about how our activities affect the environment. • We looked at what we had in place to manage environmental impacts and workplace hazards and determined we needed improvements in: Implementing Best Practices Policy & Leadership Planning Checking to ensure we follow best practices Reporting on our performance

WHY IS THE EMS IMPORTANT? • The EMS is good management - helping us protect the environment and our employees. • EMS emphasizes continual improvements and is directed toward: • Prevention of pollution • Compliance with legal requirements • Safe workplace • Actions to protect the environment and ensure we work in a safe manner are integrated within our daily work practices. • What to do to protect and safeguard the environment • How to prevent our exposure to workplace hazards

HOW WILL THE EMS AFFECT YOUR JOB? • Standardized work practices. • Minimize the use of natural resources and energy • Minimize or prevent employee exposure to hazardous substances • Direct changes for some work activities: purchasing, management of our resources and waste. • Increased training for all employees. • Depending on your job, a performance standard will be developed, similar to the safety standard. • Facility will be better able to track or monitor: • All hazardous and non-hazardous waste • Energy and natural resources use • Procurement • Contracting • Contractors working onsite • Improve the budgeting process • Increase Environmental Stewardship

MOC Policy Commitments • "MOC will conduct our activities in an environmentally responsible manner". • Through our commitment to environmental compliance and pollution prevention we will: • comply with all applicable laws, regulations and executive orders; • safeguard the community and the natural environment; and • maintain a safe and healthful workplace.

  7. Compliance Assurance Program • The Compliance Assurance Program, known as CAP identifies our legal requirements. • The CAP is organized by media and key environmental issues. • Employees must comply with all legal requirements that are applicable to their job. Requirements are integrated into Work Practices, known as SOPs. Want to know more about specific legal requirements? Look in the CAP under the the media or topic you are interested in. Environmental Management Program • The Environmental Management Program, known as the EMP identifies all the environmental and safety related SOPs. • The EMP is organized according to: • 1000 Series SOPs are applicable to all employees, contractors and visitors • 2000 Series are applicable to administrative staff • 3000 Series are applicable to operational staff • 4000 Series are applicable to staff on Vessels Want to know the work instructions that are applicable to your specific job?   9. Environmental Performance Program • The Environmental Performance Program, known as the EPP identifies our environmental performance indicators. The EPP is organized under: • Regulatory requirements • NOAA requirements • EMS implementation and maintenance • Status of all our EMS Programs Want to know more about our performance? Look in the EMP for how we are doing on meeting our compliance requirements. Check to see if the MOC has had any spills or NOVs. View our EMS audits, and conformance to all our EMS programs. Environmental Training Program • The Environmental Training Program, known as the ETP identifies all employees and the training they must receive. • Check the ETP under your name, job or position and ensure you meet your training requirements. Want to know what training you need and when is it scheduled? Look in the ETP and attend training courses. Training is critical to performing your job safely and in conformance with environmental requirements. MOC EMS Website

Pollution Prevention Program • The Pollution Prevention Program, known as P2 identifies all of our improvement activities and initiatives. • Environmental and safety improvements are focused on P2: • Reduction – Recycling - Reuse • Resource conservation and EMS administrative objectives.
