Temperate Climates Class: Opal
Hot Climates • We have covered hot climate types with a focus on Desertification (in the Sahel region of Africa) • We will now shift towards a focus on Temperate climates, specifically focusing on Mediterranean lands
Temperate Climates • Mediterranean Lands: • Between 30 and 40 Degrees (see figure 1 page 103) • On Western side of landmasses • Hot Summers: due to dry trade winds • Mild Winters: prevailing south-westerly winds
Plant Adaptation • Evergreen Trees: • Small waxy leaves or sharp thorns that don’t lose moisture through transpiration (the loss of moisture through the leaves or bark of a pant) • Trees such as the cork oak and olive have thick protective bark which help to stop heat getting in or moisture escaping through transpiration • Long tap roots reach for underground water (key to avoiding summer droughts)
Evergreens See Page 105 for examples of tree types
