  3. Plantlike Protists • Commonly called algae • All autotrophic • Make most of the Earth’s oxygen! • Can be unicellular or multicellular • Contain pigments – chemicals that produce color

  4. Euglenoids • Green, unicellular algae • Most in fresh water • Can be heterotrophs when sun is not available • Example – Euglena • Cool fact – has an eyespot that senses light

  6. Diatoms • Unicellular protists with glasslike cell walls • Found in salt and freshwater • Move by oozing slime out of their cell walls • Cool fact – You used these this morning! When they die they harden to form diatomaceous (a great polishing agent) an additive in toothpaste.

  7. Green Algae • They are green (surprise!_ • Some are unicellular and some are multicellular • Found in fresh and saltwater • Example - Ulva

  8. Red Algae • Multicellular seaweed • They are red • Fun fact – You may have also used red algae this morning. It is used to make carrageenan, which is found in hair conditioner.

  9. Brown Algae • Guess the color! • Actually also contains green, red, yellow, and orange pigment • Looks a lot like plants • Found in cool, rocky waters • Cool fact – Brown algae is used to make algin. It is found in many foods such as pudding and salad dressing.

  10. Bonus Point Opportunity • Look through your house for products that contain algae by-products. Look for diatomaceous earth, algin, and carrageenan. • Bring the product in (or a picture if you can’t bring it) for 5 bonus points. • Due by Friday 
