Oklahoma’s Federal R&D funding capture rate is low: 45th of 51 Oklahoma ranks 37th in federal income tax payment. SOURCE – Chronicle of Higher Education 2006
If Oklahoma were “average” - another $11 million If Oklahoma at the “top” - another $1.07 billion
23 public PUIs (11 U; 12 CC) – 1,500 to 17,000 students • 11 sponsored programs offices (7 U; 4 CC) • 10 are centralized, (3 have 1 FTE; 7 have 2 FTE) • pre-award services + some post-award • 1 decentralized model - 1 FTE/each of 5 colleges • 12 independent colleges & universities – 2 offices
Oklahoma Research $ - 2006 $447,000,000 for 2006 • PUIs – 15% Fed $ • PUIs – 69% students
Now, the GOOD NEWS…. Grantsmanship is getting better! • In 2004, Oklahoma was 49th in the nation!SOURCE – NSF 2003 • We have a growing grants culture • state conferences: 2004 = 1; 2007 = 6 • national rank 49th to 45th • 2 more sponsored programs offices • 4.0 added FTE • 2 major promotions to VP level • from 4 to 6 UG Research fairs
