  2. Step 1 • First, write down the sentence on the board: Ex: The presidentphoned the Queen Verb. Subject Object

  3. Step 2 • Then, erase the subject president and substitute someone for it. Ex: Someone phoned the Queen.  Who phoned the Queen?

  4. Next, write the question and the answer on the board. Ex: Someone phoned the Queen.  Who phoned the Queen? (The president phoned the Queen.)

  5. Then we rub out the Queen, substituting someone. Ex:The president phoned the Queen.  The president phoned someone. (The president phoned who/whom.)  Who/whomdid the president phone?

  6. Then we elicit the question and its answer and write them on the board. Ex: Someone phoned the Queen. Who phoned the Queen? --- The president. Ex: The president phoned someone. Who did the president phone? --- The Queen.

  7. Step 3 • Explain the differences of the structure. • Point out that to form questions about the subject of the sentence requires no change in word order. • Ex: S V O • Someone phoned the Queen. • Who phoned the Queen?

  8. Step 4 S V O The president phoned someone. The president did phone someone. O V S V Who did the President phone?

  9. Pattern Practice Madonna Michael JacksonThe Pope Martina Hingis • Who phoned Madonna? • Who did Madonna phone? • Who phoned the Pope? • Who did the Pope phone?

  10. Step 5 Write the sentences on the board. Ask students to practice the patterns. • Who phoned you yesterday/this morning/last weekend? • Who did you phone yesterday/this morning/last weekend?
