  2. What is it? • Long term transport project 10-30years • National strategic infrastructure linking major cities in north with south • Potential boost to gva and economic performance

What does it involve ? • Euston to Birmingham – 150km - no stops in Warwickshire • Direct link to Heathrow , as well as Europe via HS1. • Interchange station near NEC / BIA • Birmingham station at Curzon St , east side • Maintenance depots – preferred location for Midlands, Washford Heath • Transfer Station – 3 possibly one in Warks. • Onward Y network to Leeds and Manchester

National benefits • Reducing the N/S divide • Increasing GVA • Improving connectivity btwn major cities in North and London/ Europe • Providing strategic national infrastructure • Reducing travel times to 40 mins btwn B’ham & Manchester, 65 minutes B’ham - Leeds. • Reduce carbon emissions by up to one million tonnes a year by 2055.

  6. Regional benefits • Generate £5.3b in economic benefits, over 60 years to WM region ( including shires) • Support employment growth in WM - up to 60,000-70,000 jobs by 2040 (re location of jobs) • Support increase in GVA by 6% by 2040

Current Status December 15th NWBC Council • Opposes HS2 • Recommends consultation is deferred • Work with and support other LA’s/local MP and communities December 14th WCC Full Council 14th Dec • opposes HS2 as no environmental or economic benefits for the County • recommends consultation is deferred • Work with other LAs/action groups to provide coordinated opposition December 20th Ministerial Announcement • route option recommended in March – most appropriate general alignment • some tweaks but none significantly affecting Warks

Latest timetable • January 2011 discussions with HS2 Ltd re consultation f • February –July 2011 HS2 Ltd’s Consultation process • Late summer 2011- publication of line from B’ham-Manchester/Leeds • July- December 2011 HS2 Ltd analyse consultation responses & publish proposed route & strategy • March 2012 Consultation on route north of B’ham • October 2013 1st hybrid Bill goes to Parliament • 2015 HS2 enabling works start • 2017 Completion of Cross Rail

WCC Next Steps • Coordinating with LAs along route • Regular liaison with Action Group reps • Ongoing dialogue with HS2 Ltd • Once consultation starts will consider impact on Warwickshire including: noise, environmental, landscape, ecology, archaeology,rights of way economic, freight, classic rail , highway infrastructure impact • Mitigation requirements • Compensation requirements • Formal WCC response to consultation
