Archetypes • Archetypes are patterns that appear in literature across cultures and are repeated through the ages. • An archetype can be a character, a plot, an image or color, a theme, or a setting.
Character • Example: The low class man who tries to look upper-class and fit in with the rich • As seen in: The Great Gatsby, and The Satyricon (Trimalchio) • Example: The man wants more than he feels he’ll ever be able to achieve on his own, so he sells his soul to the devil • As seen in: “The Devil and Tom Walker” and Dr. Faustus
Character continued… • Example: The tragic hero • As seen in: The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, The Crucible, The Great Gatsby
Plot • Example: The poor boy wants to marry the rich girl • As seen in: Aladdin, The Great Gatsby, The Notebook
Image • The image of a character on top of a mountain or standing on the top of the stairs or balcony is common. This archetype symbolizes they have made it or overcome great odds, perseverance.
Color • Red: love, passion, romance, anger • Black: mystery, power, death, fear • White: pure, peace, clean, cold • Green: life, growth, jealousy, illness • Blue: peaceful, quiet, sad, refreshing • Yellow: warmth, cheerful, warning, old age • For a complete list of colors, go to Mrs. Kilby’s website.
Theme • Example: There is a constant battle between good and evil. • As seen in: Star Wars, Batman, Spiderman, and just about every comic book
Setting • Example: The addition of rain or a storm to any setting foreshadows and/or symbolizes problems, a fight, or an unhappy ending • As seen in: The Tragedy of Julius Caesar and The Great Gatsby • Example: A forest symbolizes evil • As seen in: The Crucible and“The Devil and Tom Walker”
