Understanding the Nervous System: Structure, Function, and Health

Explore the workings of the nervous system, its major body systems, and the importance of a healthy nervous system. Learn about neurons, the central and peripheral nervous systems, and how to keep your nervous system healthy. Discover the impact of problems like concussions and spinal cord injuries, and how to maintain brain health with rest, exercise, hydration, and brain games.

Play whole thing – Stress from 7:15 on 3.

  3. nervous system - Functions 1. Communication between Brain & Body 2. Coordinates all activities of the body 3. Responds and adapts to changes

  4. nervous system – Two Parts Made up of: Neurons (Nerve Cells) make up the entire Nervous System. - And includes the: Central Nervous System (CNS) 1. Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) 2.

  5. Central nervous system Includes the: Brain - Spinal Cord -

  6. Central nervous system The Nervous System’s processing center 1. It receives information from and sends information to the peripheral nervous system 2. The brain processes and interprets sensory information sent from the spinal cord 3. 4. Controls thought process 5. Guides movement

  7. Peripheral nervous system Made up of: All the nerves that lie outside of the central nervous system (CNS). -

  8. Peripheral nervous system 1. Connects the CNS to the organs, limbs, and skin Allows the brain and spinal cord to receive and send information to other areas of the body 2. 3. Allows us to react to stimuli in our environment 4. Some is under your voluntary control: limbs, muscles and joints 5. Some is controlled by the brain automatically: digestion and temperature. We call this Autonomic.

  9. Neurons

  10. Neurons

  11. Neurons

  12. Neurons - What are they? Cell that transmits information through electrical or chemical signals -

  13. Neurons Motor neurons carry information from the central nervous system to organs, glands, and muscles. 1. Sensory neurons send information to the central nervous system from internal organs or from external stimuli. 2. Interneurons relay signals between motor and sensory neurons. 3.

  14. CAN YOU TEACH YOUR NEURONS?

  15. Follow the path • CENTER • CENTER • LEFT • CENTER • LEFT • CENTER • RIGHT • RIGHT • CENTER • LEFT • RIGHT • CENTER

  16. Maze

  17. CAN YOU TEACH YOUR NEURONS? • So. . . Yes, you can. • You build and establish Neural Pathways, which is teaching them.

  19. Problems

  20. Concussion An injury to the brain resulting from an impact to the head -

  21. paralysis Severe damage or trauma to the spinal cord that stops nerves from transmitting messages -

  22. Keeping the nervous system Healthy

  23. Keeping the nervous system Healthy 1. Keep your whole body healthy Diet - Exercise - Avoiding injury - 2. Stay hydrated 3. Play Brain Games – Keep your brain active 4. Get plenty of rest/sleep

  24. Senses

  25. What part of the nervous system has our Five senses? PERIPHERAL Ex. Smell: There are several smells I would miss the most. The first one is the smell of cut grass or early morning dew. I love the smell of that morning freshness. The other smell I would miss the most is different people in my life. Lauren, my mom, and my grand mom all have smells. I would miss that part of them if I lost my sense of smell. If you lost your senses, what would you miss the most about each one? 2-3 sentences on each one.

  26. Sight: Facial expressions, driving Taste: My mom’s meatloaf, hamburgers Hearing: People laughing, crowds cheering Touch: Hot and cold
