Topics • Cherokee/Trail of Tears • Embargo Act of 1807 • Lowell Girls • War of 1812 • Southern life (for plantation owners or farmers) • Slave life in the South
President Andrew Jackson • Jackson elected 1828; claimed to stand for the economic well-being of American workers and farmers • Jackson & Democrats were criticized for slave power – to expand and strengthen slavery
Trail of Tears • Jackson wanted Indians removed “for their protection” and sent West. • In 1838 Cherokee Indian nations and other nations were forced to move West from North Carolina to present-day Oklahoma
The Whig Party • Didn’t like Jackson’s policies and power, mocked him “King Andrew” • Supported by the growth of the new middle class during the 1800s • Whigs used the campaign “Tippecanoe & Tyler too” to get William Henry Harrison elected as president in 1840. He died one month after taking office.
