  1. Narrative Plot Structure Mr. Smith Goes to Washington

  2. Introduction • The Senate died and the government had to find a new one. • People talk about this man, Jefferson Smith. They say that he is very honest and responsible because he is all about Boy Rangers. • Happy flips a coin to pick between two people and the coin landed on its side and landed on the paper about Jefferson Smith.

  3. Rising Action • Jefferson Smith proposes a bill for a boys’ camp on Willet Creek. • Then boys from all over the country gave him nickels and pennies to pay and help him. • Taylor is afraid that he might get Willet Creek because he is already building a dam so that he can build whatever he wants there and get lots of money. • So while talking over the dam bill, Paine’s daughter takes Jefferson to dinner.

  4. Rising Action • Saunders leaves, and gets drunk with Diz and wants to get married with him. • Then Jefferson goes to the Senate floor and talks about his bill, but the others are not listening or they don’t like the bill. • So he goes to the Lincoln Memorial and stays there. • Then Clarissa finds Senator Smith and convinces him to fight.

  5. Climax • Jefferson Smith goes for a filibuster. • Everyone on the floor is tired and Smith goes on for almost a day. • Then he calls a quorum.

  6. Falling Action • Jefferson talks for almost a day now and he is running out breath but still capable of taking on the floor. • Then Saunders calls newspaper boys to make papers about what Jefferson has been doing and they need to support him. • But Taylor’s men came and trashed every boy and hosed down the parade they were having. • Senator Paine brings in newspapers for evidence and he is almost about to past out.

  7. Conclusion • Then Smith talks about how Taylor is a machine and he is telling the truth. • After saying his last words, he passed out. • Then Senator Paine bursts into the Senate Chamber crying, “Expel me!…Every word that boy said is true…Every word of it is true!” • After he faints, the page signals to Clarissa the he is okay.
