Standards make up the Internet • EarthLink and other ISPs would not exist if not for standards • TCP/IP and family (http, ftp, smtp, etc.) • 14.4, 28.8, 56K modems … all v.XX standards from the ITU. • Standards allowed the Internet to flourish. • Standards allowed rapid and streamlined growth of the Internet. June 7, 2004 Standards on Broadband over Power Lines 11
Lack of Standards in Broadband • DSL still not completely streamlined • Inherently difficult to streamline, but lack of standards has played a part • User can still not fully “self provision” a DSL line • Cable is a closed arena • DOCSIS exists, but was designed (and implemented) with “closed system” in mind. • User can still not “self provision”, due mostly to implementation choices. • Result: Consumer pays higher prices and has to wait longer for service = slower adoption June 7, 2004 Standards on Broadband over Power Lines 12
BPL: The Promise and the Peril • The Promise: Power lines are everywhere • No new wires for in-home networking • Last mile, first mile and every mile in between • Electricity reaches areas of the world where phone lines don’t. • The Peril: No BPL standards domestically • HomePlug v1.0 doesn’t natively support BPL • Until very recently, no standards effort underway to bridge both Home PLC and BPL … … yet bridging the two maximizes adoption of both and minimizes the cost.
