  8. What is culture? For 1 minute silently list as many elements of culture that you can think of (i.e. religion). We will make a list all together after.

  10. Body Biography – 10 minutes Draw an outline of yourself on a piece of loose leaf. Use the instructions below to describe yourself using words and pictures. HEAD- What are you interested in? HEART- What/who do you love? What/who is important to you? What are your beliefs/values? FINGERS- What do you want to do in the future? FEET- Where do you want to go? MOUTH- What do you like to eat? What language(s) do you speak? WAIST- What do you like to wear?

  11. One aspect of Culture: World Religions Religion gives people a set of beliefs to follow. Religion is a key component of culture. • Each religion has special celebrations and worship styles • Unites followers around the world

  12. STOP- 5 minutes Turn to page 80. Look through the pages and choose 1 religion EXCEPT Christianity and write down 5 facts you didn’t know about it.

  13. Can Cultures Change? Yes! Cultural change can be brought on by: Cultural diffusion- the spread of ideas Agricultural Revolution- New processes of growing crops more effectively Industrial Revolution – New technology, machinery, transportation, and communication systems

Hindusim • Beliefs bleed into daily life practices of morality, karma, and reincarnation • Hindus worship in a temple and pray to one of the many Gods in this polytheistic religion • Their holy text is called the Vedas • Hinduism originated in Northern India and remains the dominant religion in the Indian Subcontinent • Around 1 billion followers

Buddhism • Nontheistic religion based on the writings of Siddhartha Gautama (AKA Buddha) • Originated on the Eastern side of the Indian subcontinent and remains dominant throughout Asia, specifically Eastern Asia • Ultimate goal of Buddhism is to obtain Nirvana • Buddhists worship mostly at home or in a temple • 400 million Buddhists worldwide

(Baptist, Catholic, Orthodox, Presbyterian) • Originated in Jerusalem, which is also its holy city • 2.2 Billion followers worldwide

  29. Judaism • Monotheistic/Abrahamic Religion • Holy text is the Torah (Hebrew Bible) • 14 million followers worldwide • Jews worship in Temples/Synagogues • Jewish prayers are recited in Hebrew • Place of Origin is Jerusalem (in Israel) and holy site is Israel
