Biomedical Importance of Protista: Water Treatment • The biodegradation potential of ciliated protozoa allow natural waste-water treatment to be possible. • Protists feed off bacteria resulting in lower organic loads within waste water • Protozoa allow self-purification and matter cycling in natural ecosystems.
Pathogenic Protozoa • giardia (genus) • African Sleeping Sickness:trypanosoma brucei • Malaria:plasmodium (genus) • Five species can be infected and transmitted by humans.
giardia • Caused by 40 different species from the genus giardia • Most common waterborne illness in the country • Causes diarrhea and on occasion vomiting • Protist has two nuclei for 4 flagella • Cycles from ‘hibernating cyst’ to an active state of feeding and motility • The cyst protects it from extreme conditions while being transferred from host to host • The protist should only be active when inside host http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Giardia_lamblia_SEM_8698_lores.jpg
Malaria • Mosquito born infectious disease. • Two phases one that involves the liver and one that involves red blood cells. • In 2010 there were 219 million cases 2 million deaths estimated. • Antimalarial medications are available but no vaccine exists.
African Sleeping Sickness - Caused by protozoans from the genus trypanosom. - The bloodborne sickness is transferred through the bite of a tsetse fly, from mother to fetus, and through infected needles. - Infection is broken up into two stages First Stage- Fever, headache, itching, and joint pain Second Stage- Confusion, behavioral changes, poor coordination, disturbances in sleep cycle, death.
