John Dewey • Service Learning is grounded in Dewey’s theory of experiential learning, trying to make the connection between theory and practice
Active Character After school program in North Lubbock for at Risk Youths in 4th and 5th grade We work with the students from McWhorter Elementary 16 Texas Tech University students from ESS 3342 class. Many of these students are training to be physical education teachers and coaches
Active Character 30 students are split into 6 pods with two TTU students acting as mentors/coaches The 90 minute program is divided into 5 to 10 minute segments The first 10 minutes is devoted to discussion on a particular character, truthfulness, respect,
Goals and Expectations • Teach and reinforce character development among at risk students.. Measured by • More civility towards their classmates • Reduce truancy • Fewer instances of getting into trouble at school • Provide a safe and positive environment for students to play and learn new skills • Mentors to build positive relationships and model character for students • Students become more active and enjoy moving and staying active for a life time
