R is for Region An area with shared characteristics, usually more than one element unifies a region. Elements may include physical, political, economic, or cultural characteristics. Region – An area of the earth with shared characteristics (something in common.)
Formal Region • An area with clearly defined borders. • Ex.—Continents and countries
Functional Region • A region based on a specific landform or economic practice.
Perceptional Region • Regions that are not clearly defined, they are based on your perception.
HE-- Human-Environment Interaction Human-Environment Interaction – How people depend on, adapt to, and change the physical environment.
L=Location Absolute location is the exact place where something is found. Example: 50°N 80°W Relative location describes a place in relation to other places around it. Example: Plaza de las Americas is next to the freeway. Location – The exact place on earth Where something is located.
1. Absolute Location –the exact place on earth where a geographic feature is found (such as a city) 2. Relative Location – describes a place in comparison to other places around it
P=Place “What is it like there?” Place – The physical and cultural features of a location.
Scale The relationship between distance on a map and distance in real life.

Graphic Scale • Scale is given in a drawing.
Fractional Scale • Scale is given as a fraction.
