News/Talk Programs • Depending on station it DJ’s will talk about local, national or global news. • Feature talk programs. • Live Sports Coverage – like Steve Kaplowitz. • Having a variety of all three is called a “Full Service Format.” • Can be found now on the AM dial or on Internet, or satellite TV.

  3. Different Programs • News: Have very little call ins. • Sports: sports news, talk shows and of course live coverage of both local and national sporting events. • Financial Programs • Farm/Agriculture: Update on financial livestock and crop prices. • Political.

  4. Writing the Script • Keep it Simple • For a news program or straight sports talk your opinion does not matter. Same goes with a commercial.

  5. Formats to keep in mind • Use ANNCR when ever you need an announcer to say something. Or when you need a narrator. • Use a – (double dash) whenever you want a pause. • Capitalize speaking characters on the left column and what they say on the right. • Time your script when you are done writing it.

  6. In Class Exercise • Select a 20 to 30 second radio commercial. (You can find these on Youtube) • Listen to it a couple of times. • Then using one of the radio formats, write the script for the commercial.

  7. Homework • Due Tuesday: Select a 30 second radio ad or part of a talk show and write the script for it. • Remember to read it aloud and time yourself to be sure it’s 30 seconds. • Due Tuesday: Start working on your midterm – Select a front page story from the newspaper/TV news. From the story format an idea for an ad, PSA or short script. • For your midterm (Due Thursday)  You will use your idea and write it for the radio, TV and the Internet.
