  1. Welcome toBack to School Night in Cunningham Land Second Grade

  2. A Little About Me • My background • I grew up in Ontario, CA. • I attended University of La Verne where I received my bachelor’s degree and teaching credential. • I received my master’s degree in education also from University of La Verne. • I know live Chino Hills. • I love my job!

  3. My Philosophy of Education • I believe that the classroom is ours, not mine. • I believe that the key to a better world is through educating the youth. • I believe that the students are teachers too. • I believe that teaching takes place not only in the classroom, but in the home as well. Let’s work together.

  4. Daily Schedule PE is on Monday and Wednesday Health, fine arts, computers, drama and character education are taught weekly. We will beginning a new drama program starting next week on Thursdays!!!

  5. Homework • A packet will be sent home on the first day of each week. ( starting 8/27) • The packets are due on the last day of each week. • Homework should take about 20-30 minutes in addition to 20 minutes of read aloud. • Assignments are meant to reinforce and/or enrich current units of study. • Review that your child completed all of their homework and sign the read aloud daily.

  6. Citizen Reports – Self-Reflection • These will be sent home at the end of the week and need to be signed and returned at the beginning of the next week. • They are designed to encourage communication between school and home.

Language Arts • In our new language arts program we will integrate reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills through a variety of literacy activities. • Vocabulary development • Accelerated Reader (A.R.) • Comprehension Strategies • Spelling • Phonics • Grammar skills • Handwriting • Public speaking • Writing

  10. Reading Comprehension • Metacognition • Activating Schema • Mental Imaging • Connecting • Questioning • Inferring • Synthesizing

Math • This year’s curriculum will include: • Problem-solving • Add and subtract within 20 by memory • Addition and subtraction with and without regrouping • Work with equal groups to gain foundations for multiplication • Place value • Time • Money • Measurement • Geometry • Graphing • Addition and subtraction 1 minute fluency tests will begin in September.

Health and Character Education Too Good for Drugs • Personal Health • Injury Prevention and Safety • Alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs • Nutrition Character Counts • Citizenship • Perseverance • Respect • Empathy • Safety • Kindness • Gratitude • Fairness • Responsibility • Trustworthiness Character Matters play is scheduled for Thursday, February 7th at 8:00 a.m. Mark your calendars!!!

  16. Citizen of the Week • Students will bring home a poster to create with their family and will share it with the class the following week. • Cultural awareness and self-esteem are developed and recognized through each child participating in this weekly activity.

  17. Birthdays • Your child’s birthday or ½ birthday will be acknowledged this year in class. • School policy states that we will not be accepting parent contributions to celebrate birthdays. Also, the distribution of personal invitations on campus will not be permitted.

  18. Supplies and Donations Thank you for the donations!! As the year progresses we are continuously in need of: -Paper -Kleenex -Ziploc Bags -Expo Markers - Ear buds/ headphones
