I Am The Cheese Matthew Patterson 1977 By: Robert Cormier
Plot Synopsis A boy in search of his father is headed to Rutterburg, Vermont on his bicycle to give him this package. On this long and cold journey he meets new people and has a tough time piecing together his past. He also has flashbacks of his past quite often. Can Adam Farmer make it to Rutterburg, Vermont and find his father?
“The pink car brushes by and hands reach out for me, pushing, grabbing, and I lose my balance, the bike heads for the ditch, I am helpless to halt its progression toward the ditch and then I feel myself falling, spinning, sucked into the ditch .” (p. 96) I can relate to this because I have a friend that got hit by a car a couple of years ago and he was knocked into a ditch. Major Event
“I emerge from the drugstore and walk to the parking meter and my bike is gone. The five o’clock crowd passes by on the sidewalk. I look at the spot where my bike was. I shouldn’t have left it there unguarded.” (p.136) I can relate because I have had my bike stolen two times. The first time I got it back. The second time I didn’t but it was my fault for not locking the shed it was in. Major Event
“Here they were being frightened and intimidated and held at bay by, of all things, a dog. Not an armed robber. Not a wild animal. But a dog.” (p.34) I am not scared of dogs but there is a lot of animals I am scared of. If I was held at bay by one I problem would have been scared too. Major Event
Adam is a young boy who is fearful, sensitive, and paranoid. He is both claustrophobic and afraid of large spaces. His greatest fear is dogs. “ I am afraid of a thousand things, a million. Like is it possible to be claustrophobic and yet fear open spaces, too?” (p.2) I can relate to him because I am very claustrophobic. I hate being in real small spaces. Characterization
Adam was determined to get his package to his father. He would do anything to get it there no matter what happened. He was on a mission and nothing could bring him down. I can relate because when I want to get something done I get it done as soon as possible. Characterization
“The doctor opens the box and takes out pokey the pig. My old friend…he places pokey in my arms…I rock pokey in my arms.” When I was young I used to love stuffed animals. I slept with them and they went with me every where. If I had lost one and someone would have found it and gave it back I would have been so happy. Characterization
