Maths Curriculum Changes: Yr 1 Changes to the Maths Curriculum – at a glance What’s been added? • Counting and writing numerals to 100 • Write numbers in words up to 20 • Number bonds secured to 20 • Use of vocabulary such as equal, more than, less than,
Yr 2 Changes to the Maths Curriculum – at a glance What’s been added? • Solving problems with subtraction • Finding / writing fractions of quantities (and lengths) • Adding two 2-digit numbers • Adding three 1-digit numbers • Demonstrating addition & multiplication e.g. 5x2=10 2x5=10 • Describing properties of shape (e.g. edges, vertices) • Measuring temperature in °C • Tell time to the nearest 5 minutes • Making comparisons using < > = symbols • Recognise £ p symbols and solve simple money problems
Year 2 SATS Tests May 2016 • Key Features of the Mathematics tests From 2016, questions in the mathematics national curriculum tests will be linked to specific areas of the new curriculum. • At key stages 1, the new tests for mathematics will have two components. • The first is an arithmetic paper testing fluency through calculation. The second assesses the ability to reason and apply mathematics.
Arithmetic Children in Year 2 are now required to sit an arithmetic paper as part of their numeracy SATs. In KS1, the children have 20 minutes to answer 25 questions.
So, what does an Arithmetic paper look like? • 20 minutes approx • 25 questions • No equipment allowed. • Space to show working. • 1 mark each answer. • No extra marks for working.
Paper 1 – sample Questions Y2 Some simple addition questions
Have a go … Adding more than one number together
Fractions of numbers How would you work it out?
Arithmetic from Year 1 upwards • To ensure we fully prepare the children for the increased expectations in their SATs, children from Year 1 upwards are taught arithmetic skills and strategies. They also complete sample arithmetic questions each week for their year group.
Mathematical Reasoning Children in Year 2 are now required to sit a reasoning paper as part of their numeracy SATs. In KS1, the children have 35 minutes to answer 31 questions. (5 are Oral questions.)
How can you help? • Timetables: Encouraging your child to learn the times tables fully will help with arithmetic. • Counting: On and back from any given number. Use objects to help visual learners. 2’s, 5’s, 10’s, 3’s, 4’s. • Division Facts:Using the inverse to find the answers: 32 ÷ 8 =4 because 8x4 = 32 Also the same to help with + and – • Maths in daily life: Shopping: Encourage children to add items, use money and work out problems. • Baking/Cooking: Encourage your child to follow a recipe. This will help them to develop their skills in literacy, ratio and proportion, measuring and time.
