Role Play “THE MEETING”
Steps to becoming a successful Protégé • Complete a Self Assessment • Know what you want • Be committed to that goal • Complete a journal; update your MPQ • Communicate with your Mentor • Be flexible • Be patient • Remain focused
Complete a self assessment • Know your skills and challenges • Have a plan to address your challenges • Have a plan to sharpen your skills
Know what you want • Research IRS positions • Shadow someone in your target position • Complete a Career Learning Plan • Formerly known as an IDP
Be committed to that goal • Request and accept temporary assignments • Serve as an on-the-job instructor • Prepare your own annual rating self assessments • Take classes (IRS paid and on your own) • Follow up on requests • Check the COL weekly • Participate in mock interviews
Update your MPQ • Identify classes taken • Identify certificates earned • Identify assignments completed • Remove outdated items not relevant to your target position or the position for which you are applying
Communicate with your Mentor • Be prepared to share all of the above • Be open to constructive criticism • Be true to yourself • Be available for conversations
Be flexible • Your initial target position may not be the position for you. What is your plan B? • You may need to take a downgrade to get to the position that you want • You may have to move to a new location to get the position • You may have to travel more in the new position
Be patient • Clichés are plentiful for a reason • Mentors may not be available when you want • Announcements for your target position may not open frequently • Training and certification may not come as fast as you would like • Temporary assignments may not open right away • Keep on moving forward
Remain Focused • Develop a plan with your mentor and work the plan • Be ready to adjust the plan if necessary • Things may appear cloudy at first but will become clearer with time • Your education belongs to you • Growth is an adrenaline rush • Your tenacity will be noticed • There are no guarantees, but personal growth is it’s own reward
MentorA person, always more experienced, who helps guide another individual’s development. • Have a sincere interest in helping others with their growth • Be confident in your own skills and abilities • Establish a partnership plan • Take a mentoring course • Communicate with your protégé
Mentor cont. • Follow through on commitments • Prepare for the ending • Be sensitive to cultural and other differences • Be honest about their career potential • Work with them on development of a career plan
Establish a Partnership Plan • Establish length of relationship • Discuss boundaries (your not a personal counselor) • Discuss methods of feedback • Determine frequency and types of meetings and other activities • Identify what role if any, the protégé’s manager will play in this plan/relationship
The goal of the partnership plan is to: establish a foundation in the relationship of mutual trust and respect.
COMMUNICATION IS THE KEY
Active Listening Techniques • Silence • Acknowledge • Questioning or “Probing” • Paraphrasing
Paraphrasing • Let the other person finish his or her thought • Repeat what you think the person is saying in your own words • Ask the person if that’s what was meant • If the answer is “yes,” continue the conversation • If the answer is “no,” ask the person to restate what was meant
Finding a Mentor • Determine your development goal • Determine what type of mentor you want • Internal or external to your organization or agency • Government Resources -SCORE Association • Organizations – AIMS, FEW, BIG • Formal or informal – Mentor Program, or someone you respect or admire
