Service-Learning • Service learning is a method of teaching that combines formal instruction with a related service in the community. Learning that is enhanced through direct application. It is also called youth service. Is one of the best forms of experimental education.
There are some major benefits in service learning. With the service learning that I’ve done this year, I’ve met many different people and gained friends. If it wasn’t for the service learning, I would never have met these friends. • Also, I was able to help in some way and helping others in a good way is always a benefit.
One of the organizations I volunteered for was Relay for life. Relay for life is an organization that helps raise money for the American Cancer Association. Each year, more than 4 million people in over 20 countries take part in this global phenomenon and raise much-needed funds and awareness to save lives from cancer. It is where survivors and family members of deceased cancer patients gather together to celebrate life and to raise money. The fundraiser lasts for 24 hours and at midnight every one lights a candle for someone they know who has died of or has cancer.
During Halloween 2012 I helped the Valdosta State Recreation Center with their Haunted trail. They were trying to help raise money so that the C.O.R.E. could continue to go on outdoor “adventures.” While volunteering here, I had to paint my face and hang from a drop cord to frighten people. I’m afraid of heights so doing that was very exciting.
During the relay for life, Brooks and I took a break to eat us some of the pop corn we were selling.
Last month, I went with one of my roommates to give blood at the Basketballs blood drive and gave one pint of blood. As you can see, I was very pale because it turned out I was allergic to something they cleaned my skin with.

This year I have learned a lot thanks to my service learning. I’ve had the opportunity to work along side many great people who are passionate about what they volunteer for. They have taught me how to have fun while I work, and how I can learn many different life lessons through volunteer works.
