3. Introduction Telford - A Division of Lincoln University has been in the South Otago farming community for nearly 50 years when, in 1964, the Telford Farm Training Institute emerged as a training facility for agriculture. Today, Telford educates thousands of students throughout New Zealand, in a variety of agricultural courses. The on-campus facility, which is based in South Otago, has large scale sheep/beef, dairy, deer and forestry units with a total area of 880ha. The farms are commercial operations, providing real farming experiences.  We would like to propose that our well equipped campus be the venue for hosting the 2014 NAAE Conference .

4. Why Telford? Telford is a rural agricultural training campus which runs courses in agriculture, horticulture, equine, apiculture and forestry. Telford is a centrally based training institution, situated 80km (50 minutes) south of Dunedin and 7km from Balclutha in a picturesque rural setting. Telford is able to provide accommodation, catering, and a range of classrooms all on the one site. All parts of the campus are easily accessible. In 2010 Telford merged with Lincoln University and now has access to many of the resources available from the University eg tutors and scientific staff.

What Can We Offer You? • Venues: • A large meeting room for keynote speakers. • Classrooms and computer rooms, for breakout groups. • Specialist units: • Forestry and Equine units to run specialist activities related to these topics. • A Dairy Farm (500 cows), Deer Farm (1000 deer) and a Sheep Farm (3000 sheep) to run activities. • Transport: • 7 minivans - to transport people to different venues. • Ideal location • Telford-A Division of Lincoln University – Gateway to the Catlins

8. We aim to have representation from: PIEF: Primary Industries Education Foundation and Invite members from ACARA (Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority) to talk on the new National Curriculum that is to be implemented in 2014 or 2015

The Conference • The conference aims to include the following: • Keynote speakers • The opportunity to network with New Zealand Agriculture and Horticulture teachers. • Issues relating to Agriculture / Horticulture • Updates and discussions regarding Australian curriculum • The ability to gain resources relevant to your teaching areas • Industry speakers of relevance to the conference We have access to lecturers and scientific staff from Lincoln University for keynote speakers and facilitation of breakout groups and running workshops • Opportunity to visit Equine, Forestry, Horticulture and Agriculture Units.

11. The Conference • The conference aims to include the following: • Environmental topics of relevance to Agriculture/Horticulture • Water quality and sampling • Soil conservation • Effluent management • Fertiliser use and management • Climate change • Biodiversity in Agriculture/Horticulture

13. Activities • Agriculture: • On site • Telford Farms: Workshops related to the Dairy, Deer and Sheep Units • Soil water testing activities • Nutrient budgeting activities • Tractor/ ATV activities and related farm safety • Off site • Sheep milking (an emerging industry) • Edendale Dairy Factory (now one of the largest in NZ) • Quality Yarns: Milton (has woollen and worsted wool processing systems) • Invermay Agricultural Research Centre (1 hour from Telford) • Stirling cheese factory • Silver Ferns meat works

14. Activities • Horticulture: • On Site • Apiculture workshop • Developing horticulture resources • SimCLIM Software • Off Site • Possibility of trips to Central Otago or Southland, for the latest developments in Horticulture in that region – about 1.5 hours in either direction - Viticulture, Orcharding and `Cool Climate Crops’

15. Post Conference • Once the conference is complete, people will have one or two different options: • 1) Leave for home. • 2) Stay on for a visit to Central Otago, Queenstown or Stewart Island • (this would be at own cost) • Central Otago / Queenstown • Queenstown - Skyline restaurant and views of Queenstown • Earnslaw trip (a boating cruise to visit Walter Peak’ sheep station, which is a historic sheep station) • Arrowtown (a historic gold mining town) • Flights could be organised out of Queenstown for return trip home • Stewart Island • This trip takes visitors on a journey to Oban and sailing around Paterson’s Inlet • This could be organised as a day trip leaving from Telford early in the morning arriving back that night and leaving for home the next morning.
