WHO IS AN ADULT LEADER? Adult leader is a person who works voluntarily in 4H organisation. He orsheworks with a young person butdoesn’twork on behalf of him. Thereare no restrictionstowardshis/herprofessionorage. The mostimportant is thatshe/hewants to work with youngpeople. Adultleadersusuallywork as club advisers. In addition to thattheycontribute in organisingcelebrations, exhibitions, differentkind of activitydays, camps and competitions. 4H organisescourses for the adultleaderswhere new ideas and knowledge is shared and adultleaderscanlearn to knoweachothers.
WHY TO VOLUNTEER? It is fun to work as and adultleader. Young peopleareactive and like to dodifferentkind of things and learn new skills. Young peoplearealsogenuine. Theytellleaderswhattheyreallythink. As a leaderyouseealso the results of yourwork. Youwon’tgetsalarybutyouwillgainsomethingmuchmorevaluable. Youfeelyouhavecontributed to yourlocalcommunity. Youget a chanceperhaps to takepart in differenttrainingcourses and trips.
VALUES AND ADULT LEADERS Learning bydoing is a key in 4H. Whiledoingdifferentkind of thingstogether with youngpeople, young person learnvaluesbothfrom the leader and fellowmembers. He/She sees how an adultthink and act and whatvalues and honestycriteriashe/hehas. As an leaderyouhaveverysignificantrole in formingvalues. Leadership is guidance and settinguplimits. By supporting the personaldevelopment of the young person and allowingyouth a chance to testhis /herabilitiesyoucansupporthim/herbest, it is important to encourageyouth to trydifferentkind of things.
Welearn and grow life long. The worldchanges and sodoesvalues. Whilediscussing with youngpeople and adult person has to thinkabouthis/herownvalues and ifthosearestillvalid. Being a leader is challenging, rewarding and responsiblejob. YOUTH DEVELOPMENT FROM CHILD TO YOUNG PERSON A child of 7-12 years of agelivesquitecarelesstime. The earlychildhood is behind with fastphysical and mentalgrowth. Teenageupheaval is ahead in duetime. Thisphase of childhood is important. The time is when a child is preparingherself into teenage. Ownidentity and selfassurancebase on thisphase. How she/hefeelsabouthimself, hisskills, does he fit in the group? Allthisinfluenceverymuch on futuredevelopment. Psyhological and emotionaldevelopment of preadolescence, adolescence and lateadolescenceincludesphysicaldevelopment(fitness, health, co-ordination, physicalchanges), socio-moraldevelopment (peerrelationships, valuesacquisition, culturalawareness, leadershipdevelopment), cognitivedevelopment (concrete, operational, criticalreasoning, problemfinding, decisionskills) and vocational /careerdevelopment.

HOBBIES AND 4H Somechildrenstart a hobby already at the age of three. At the age of 9 yearsoldtrydifferenthobbies. At thisageyoungpeoplearereallyactive. Parentsdoinfluence on children’shobbiesverymuch. Theirencouragement help children to continue with his hobby. Withoutsupportfrom home a childmaydrop out fromallhobbieswhen he reachesteenage. It is goodif a childhas at leastone hobby at theage of 7-12years of age. If the young person hasnotbeeninvolved with hobbiesbeforeteenage, itmaybedifficultlater. Hobbiesgive a child an opportunity to carry out his/herplans. Itallowsyouth to experiencesuccess and progress. ”I CAN, I CAN LEARN MORE”. Hobbiesteach to becomefarsighted. Currentlyyoungpeoplearetaught to getwhattheywantfast, to beimpatient. In life, youhave to learnhow to struggle, to wait in order to reachtargets. Hobbiesteachalsohow to react with disappointments. The childneedssupport with disappointments and difficulties. It is important to supportchild to continuereagrdless of difficulties.
WHAT DO YOUNG PEOPLE WANT TO DO? Going to schooloftenchangechild’shobbies. He/ Shelearnsaboutdifferenthobbies and maywant to start a new hobby together with herfriends. Young people at differentagedohavedifferenthobbies. The bestway to find out aboutit- is to talk to youngpeople. Adultleader and 4H coordinatormayvisitschool and tellabout 4H activities. The bestway is to askfromyoungpeoplewhatdotheywant to learn?
CLUB ACTIVITIES Instruction of club activities is teameducation, Itmeansthatwholegroupdecidetogetherabout club rules. The adultadvisercansupport and guideyoungpeople. He/sheneedstime to listenyoungpeople. Leader is also an adult person, whosets the limits with his /herownconduct and alsosupervisethatallobey set rules. It is good to rememberthatshe /he is an idol, to whomchildrenwant to identify. It is a challenge to remain as an adult and not to try to betoomuch a friend. Youngstersimitate an adult person both in good and bad.
THE CLUB RULES Club needsalwaysrules. Rulesgive a safesurrounding for the meeting. It is important club rulesarediscussed in the beginning of each club seasontogether with club members. Whenyoungpeoplehavebeeninvolved with making the rules, theyrespect and obey the rulesbetter. PLANNING OF CLUB ACTIVITIES • It is important to planeachmeetingbeforehand. Activitiesarealwaysdifferentbut the basicstructure in meetingsgives a feeling of the continuation and safety to participants, club rituals. 4H IS A FAMILY PROGRAMME • PARENTS AND 4H • Parentsdohave an importantrole in theirchildren’s hobby. 4H AND WORK EDUCATION The main idea in workeducation of children is learning new skillsbydoingthem. Chineseproverbsays: ”Whatyouhear, youforget, whatyousee, yourememberwhatyoudo, youlearn.” CHILDREN’s CENTURY Childrenweretaken as smalladultsbefore, childhooddidnotexist. In the beginning of twentiethcenturythisattitudestarted to change and peoplestarted to understand the significance of childhood as a step to adult life. 4H AND LEARNING BY DOING – METHOD (LBD) • 4H realises the principles of workeducation. The difference of 4H and otheryouthorganisations is mainly in 4H’s projectactivities. 4H tries to findyoungpeople a 4H Taskorprojectwhichshe/he is capable and willing to dowork with. Young people of age 7-9 canstartworking with 4H projects . At thatagelearningbydoing and skillsdevelopment is the main idea. PROBLEMS AT 4H CLUB People aredifferent. It is richness, butalsomeansconflicts. Usuallyproblemscanbesolvedbydiscussion. ENCOURAGE TO TALK ABOUT THE PROBLEMS As a leaderit is important to encourageyoungpeople to talkabouttheirproblems and solveproblemsbydiscussing with the other person. Instead of shouting and talking at sametime, 4H membersareencouraged to speakclearly, one at the time and openly. Lerning to solveproblemsbytalking is important and the role of the leader is veryimportant. WHY THE GROUP IS IMPATIENT? Lackingactivitiescauseimpatience. Impatiencecauseotherproblems, teasingothers and disturbace. Also the personalproblemsmayreflect into his/herbehaviour in the group. If the young person hasnothinginteresting to do, he maybecomefrustrated.
Especiallyifyouhavedifferentagegroupsmixed in samegroup, youshouldtakecarethatallhavesomethingsensible to do. 8 yearoldgirlhasdifferentintereststhan a 11 yearoldboy . As a leaderyouhave to thinkabout the personaldevelopment of members of the group and planactivitiesaccording to that. HOW TO SOLVE PROBLEMS? Ifyouhaveteasing in the group, youcanformsmallergroups. Giveopportunities for youngpeople to learn to knoweachothersbetter. Talkingopenlyabout the situation is important. Ifsomeone is disturbing the meetingyoucangivehim/herspecialtasks, If the grouphasdisagreementsaboutfutureplansit is good to find out whatare the possibilities to carry out differentoptions. Ifthereareseriousdifficulties, try to find help formparents, teacherorhealthservice.

Regardless of the positiveaspects of the work, the leadercan’talwaysbear the stress. The motivationmayalsorun out. WHAT DO YOU COMMIT YOURSELF Adultleaderseffect on youngpeople’slivestremendously. He /she is an adultrolemodel and gives stimulus for youngpeople.It is important to thinkifyoudohavetime and strength to commityourself to volunteerwork. And for how long period? Try to take as manytasks as youareable to carry out. Tellalso the 4H members and 4H coordinatorwhatyouarecapable to do. How muchtimeyoucancommit. Ifyouareasked to domore, youcansayyoudowhatyouhavepromised to do, notmore. Takecare of yourself, yourhealth and energy.
YOU ARE NOT ALONE 4H adultleader/volunteer is notalone, He /shehas a 4H coordinator, 4H regional and national levelassisting to him/her. 4H coordinatorstask is to contactvolunteers/ adultleadersfrequently. Coordinatorneed to inform the volunteersaboutwhat is happening in the organisation and of all new materials. Itwouldbealso a good idea to organise a volunteermeeting /trainingfromtime to time, in order to share the thoughts, get new ideas and discuss of the problems with peers.
RIGHTS AND DUTIES OF THE ADULT LEADERS Adultleaderhasgot a right to saythatshe/he is tired and he needsrest. He canalsosaythathe/shewants to resign the work. Hisduty is to takecare of himself/herselfsothathe/shehasenergy to do the work. Adultleaderduty is to dohis/herwork as well as she/hecan and follow the guidelines and values 4H is having. Youcanfindideas and support for yourvolunteerworkfromlibrary, internet and frompeers.
