3. The course looks at 6 areas of Scouting: • The Purpose, Principles, and Method of Scouting • The Promise and the Law • The 6 Personal Development Areas • Faith, beliefs, and the founding of values • The Scout Association’s Religious Policy

4. Aim of the course To explore the link between the values expressed in the Purpose and Method of Scouting and a balanced programme

5. Objectives • Explain how the values of Scouting are expressed in the Purpose, Principles, and Method • Understand the 6 Personal Development Areas that underpin the Balanced Programme • Understand how a Balanced Programme incorporates the values of Scouting • Be able to give practical examples of how faith and beliefs can be incorporated into a balanced programme • Recognise that there are occasions where reflection, prayer, and worship are appropriate • Enable young people to take part in reflection, prayer, and worship • Outline the Scout Association’s Religious Policy and participants’ role in implementing that policy

6. Purpose, Principles, and Method Task(1) In small groups, discuss what is meant by: “purpose” “principles” “method” with respect to Scouting; then share your thoughts with the rest of the leaders on the course

7. Purpose, Principles, and MethodTask(2) This exercise is based on the use of a dice and will be explained to you by your trainer

8. Purpose, Principles, and Method Task(3) In small groups, discuss how the values of Scouting are expressed in the Purpose, Principles, and Method. Think about ways in which a balanced programme incorporates the values expressed. Then give a brief overview of what you discussed. Did you reach any consensus?

The Purpose of Scouting To help young people achieve their full physical, intellectual, social, and spiritual potential as individuals, as responsible citizens, and as members of their local, national, and international community. Scouting is NOT a youth club, but an educational movement with a clear aim/purpose. It aims to make the world a better place, and as such is to be considered idealistic in the way in which it operates. This idealism is reflected in its principles:

The Principles of Scouting 3 principles underpin Scouting: Duty to self Duty to others Duty to God Duty to self encourages young people to develop their own gifts and talents and to be responsible for who they become and what they do Duty to others encourages them: to share in the development of society; to respect the dignity of others; to promote peace; and to protect the natural world Duty to God will be considered later

11. The 6 Personal Development Areas: • Body • Mind • Faith and Beliefs • Relationships • Community • Surroundings (Environment)

12. The Method of Scouting The Scout method seeks to provide an enjoyable, attractive scheme of progressive training for young people based around the Scout Law and Promise, guided by adults. It involves: enjoying what they are doing learning by doing participating in varied and progressive activities making choices for themselves taking responsibility for their actions working in groups taking increasing responsibility for others taking part in outdoor activities sharing in prayer and worship making and living out their Promise

13. Religious PolicyThe 5 principles of spiritual development: • Develop an inner discipline and training • Be involved in corporate (group) activities • Understand the natural world around you • Help to create a more tolerant and caring society • Discover the need for prayer and worship

The Scout Association’s Religious Policy All members of the Movement are encouraged to: • Make every effort to progress in their understanding and observance of their Promise to do their best to do their duty to God • Belong to some religious body • Carry into practice the principles of their belief

15. Tasks(1) In small groups, share ways in which leaders can help young people work towards the five principles of spiritual development

16. Tasks(2) In small groups, and using the case studies provided, identify opportunities within that programme for prayer and worship. Be prepared to give a short overview of the opportunities you have identified to members of the other groups

18. Validation In order to validate this module you will need to select two of the items on page 32 of the Adult’s Personal File. Try to make at least one of them a practical activity involving work with the Section to which you belong
