Study Objective • Determine whether or how the fish community of the Wabash R. has changed in a portion of the river that was previously within the thermal plume from the former Breed Power Plant.
Study Area • From about 1 mile upstream of Darwin Ferry to York, Illinois.
Study Design • 2 electrofishing zones upstream of the former thermal discharge and 3 zones downstream of it. • 1 riffle area sampled by seining upstream of the former discharge and one riffle downstream.
Sampling Frequency • Monthly in July, August, September, and October 2011 and 2012.
Data Analysis • The current data will be compared to those collected by EA and others while the plant was still running.
Seine Results—July 2011, Darwin Ferry Riffle • 28 spp • M. silvery minnow was dominant • Spotfin shiner was common • Four darter species but only logperch and rainbow were common • No Pimphales and no madtoms • Unusual species: • Mud darter (1) • Steelcolor shiner (1) • Silver shiner (1)
Seine Results—July 2011, Riverview Riffle • 26 spp • M. silvery minnow was dominant • Spotfin shiner was common • Only three darter species; only logperch was common • Unusual species: • Mud darter (1) • Steelcolor shiner (2) • Silver Shiner (2) • Bigeye chub (1) • Suckermouth minnow (2)
