  2. Animal Kingdom Members of the animal kingdom come in all shapes and sizes. However, they all share common, basic characteristics. w Eat food and move in some way to get food w made of millions of cells working together as a unit w each cell has a cell membrane, but no cell wall

  3. Animal Kingdom Think of as many animals as you can. It may seem impossible to classify them all! It is really quite easy when taken one step at a time. All members of the animal kingdom are first divided into 2 main groups based on their structure - vertebrates and invertebrates.

  4. Any animal with a backbone is called a vertebrate. The backbone of a vertebrate is not made of a single bone. It is made of many connected bones called vertebrae. All the other bones in the body of a vertebrate attach in some way to its backbone. This makes the backbone the most important bone of the skeleton. Even if a vertebrate lacks arms or legs, it always will have a backbone. All vertebrate animals belong to the Phylum Chordata. They are divided into classes based on their structure and whether they are warm or cold blooded.

  5. Invertebrates are animals that do not have a backbone. Invertebrates make up a large part of the animal kingdom. Once animals have been identified as invertebrates, they can be classified further by their structure and form. Invertebrate make up 97% of the animal kingdom! • There are at least 13 invertebrate phyla in the animal kingdom. The eight most common are: - sponges - hollow-bodied animals - flat worms - round worms - segmented worms - mollusks - arthropods - echinoderms

  6. How can you tell if something is an animal? eats food, moves in some way to get food, made of millions of cells with no cell wall All animals can be divided into what 2 groups? vertebrates and invertebrates How can you tell the difference between the 2 groups? vertebrates have backbones, invertebrates do not Are these animals vertebrates or invertebrates?
