Department of Public Safety • The Department of Public Safety is currently staffed at 21 Full Time and Reserve Officers, 12 Community Service Officers, and 18 Dispatchers and Call Takers which operates 24 hours/day, 7 days a week • First Response includes medical, criminal, and environmental emergencies campus-wide • The DPS Mission is to preserve a safe learning environment for the University Community • Two Offices: Parking/Transportation on the UC 5th floor, Patrol/Dispatch on Lone Mountain • We maintain a 24-hour Communication Center (Non-Emergency 415-422-4201 and Emergency X2911) • Officers conduct proactive patrol of the University Community using: Patrol Vehicle, Bicycle, Segway, Motorcycle and Foot Patrol • We operate an evening and night-time Safety Escort Service for the Campus Community (Shuttle and Patrol), and Follow Me Service • DPS also manages Lost and Found Services located at the Parking/Transportation office

  9. Personal Security – If You’re Attacked • Keep your head. Stay as calm as possible and evaluate your options. • Make a decision based on the circumstances. But, don’t resist if the attacker has a weapon. • If you are approached by someone in a vehicle, do not enter the vehicle • If you are being forced into a vehicle by a subject, experts recommend that you physically resist and scream for help • Keep assessing the situation as it is happening. If one strategy doesn’t work, try another. • You may be able to turn the attacker off with unusual behavior such as acting crazy, stating you have a sexually transmitted disease, pretending to faint, etc. • Remember, by law you have the legal right to defend yourself, you do not have to be a victim. • Seek help immediately! call X2911(on campus) or 911 (off campus).

  10. Personal Safety – Subject Physical Description • Race • Sex • Height • Weight • Hair Color • Eye Color • Age • Marks, Scars, Tattoos, etc. • Clothing Description • Were any weapons seen? • Last known direction of travel

Residence Hall Security • Lock your doors even during short naps, in the bathroom, or just visiting down the hallway. • Never prop open doors, always close them completely. • Account for your room keys and USF I.D. cards at all times • Never leave your clothing unattended in the laundry room or in the bathroom. • Never leave your jewelry on the sink while you shower. • Be aware of strangers loitering suspiciously in the hallways or stairwells. • Never allow strangers into the building, and close all doors behind you whenever entering or exiting the building. • Report all assaults, thefts, and suspicious persons or incidents to Public Safety. “IN A TIMELY MANNER”

  12. Sexual Assault Prevention • Always be aware of your surroundings • Stay in well-lit areas as much as possible • Walk confidently, directly, at a steady pace. A rapist looks for Vulnerability. • Walk on the side of the street facing traffic. • Walk close to the curb. Avoid doorways, bushes and alleys. • If you think you are being followed, walk quickly to areas where there are other people and lights. • If you are in trouble or feel you are in danger, don’t be afraid to attract help any way you can. • Be aware of other people in parking areas, especially those close to your vehicle. • If you choose to carry any type of weapon for self-protection, give careful consideration to your ability and willingness to use it. Remember there is always the chance that it could be taken away and used against you
