Warm-Up • Turn to a new page, date it • Observe the directions on the left and answer the following • What measurement does Google Maps use to give these directions? • How difficult would it be to follow a set of directions without a precise measurement of distance? • What other units of distance do you know? • What is a good definition for distance? • Create a set of directions to your favorite place Driving directions to 210 E Trade St, Charlotte, NC 28202 1430 Alleghany St. Charlotte, NC 28208 1. Unit 2: uniform motion • Why do you think this will be called “Uniform Motion”? • Key terms: • Frame of Reference: • Reference Point: • Position: • Distance: • Displacement: • Time: • Vector: • Scalar:
Unit 2: uniform motion • Time • Units include: sec, min, hrs • Distance • Units include: cm, m, km, mi, in, ft, etc. • Definition: amount an object travels; amount of space between two points
Today’s class • You will design an experiment that measures the distance of a car versus time • Take 15 minutes to: Identify QtbA, IV, DV, Apparatus, Procedure • Take 15 minutes to: Collect data, remember MULTIPLE TRIALS • Take 10 minutes to: Create a rough sketch of your data (Can you determine a relationship? If not, what went wrong)
Concept application • What would our life be like without accurate units of distance? • How do you think scientists determine standardized units of distance? • Why would it be bad if anyone could create units of distance? (Ie: if I could create a “Milliner” that represents 216 ft) • What did the slope of your graph represent? • What were the units of your slope?
Create a “motion map” • Suppose Ms. Milliner has won a grant that will allow her to take her students to a popular destination around the world • Answer the following with a partner • Choose 3 places that you might like to go to • How would we travel to this destination? • What directions could you give to this place? • What activities would you like to do in this place? • Tomorrow you will create a “motion map” based on your responses
