Asthma in Greenville • Based on 2003 estimates, 190,000 adults and 91,000 children suffer from asthma in SC. • In Greenville County, it is estimated that about 16,135 adults suffer from asthma. • It is the leading cause of hospitalization in Greenville County for children under the age of 18. • US asthma cases more than tripled from 6.7 million in 1980 to 21.9 million in 2002 Death and Disease Source: SCDHEC, Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System

HIV and STD’s Out of 46 South Carolina counties, Greenville County ranks: • 26th for HIV • 25th for AIDS • 25th for Syphilis • 24rd for Gonorrhea • 34th for Chlamydia Death and Disease Rankings are based on rates of cases per 100,000. Untraditional household births are common in Greenville, and are higher than the country. • In 2006, 5,876 women had children in Greenville County, up 133% since 2001. • Among those, 36%, or over 2,100 births, were among unmarried women. The United States rate is 29% and for South Carolina the rate is 44%. • In 2005, 73% of births with African Americans were to single mothers; 27% of white births in Greenville.
