  2. Optimism and Individualism How do common people rise? • Ordinary citizens became involved in reform movements to improve American society. • Changes in voting laws expanded the electorate to include nearly all white males and they voted for Andrew Jackson for president in 1828.

  3. What is Transcendentalism? • In the 1830s and the 1840s, it was an organized movement that embodied the ideas of thinkers active in New England. • Emerson was the leading figure, began as an informal discussion club. • Other people in the club where Margaret Fuller, Henry David Thoreau & Nathaniel Hawthorne.

  4. The essence of Transcendentalism was the philosophy know as Idealism. • Believing what was in the mind was more important than what they experienced. • Ex. “Nature,” “I see the spectacle of morning from the hilltop over against my house, from day break to sunrise, with emotions which an angel might share,” - Emerson

  5. What was Emerson’s Outlook on Optimism? • Emerson believed that the universe existed for humanities benefit.
