Cosmetics (Formatting) • Italicize book and film titles (Angela’s Ashes) • Short stories, poetry, and song lyrics are in quotes—never underlined (“The Boarding House,” “Act of Union”) • Spell out numbers under 100 • Numbers over 100 should use digits • Never use symbols instead of words except for with the dollar sign (example: no #, %, or &)

Best Common Practice • Do NOT use contractions in formal writing. • Avoid “thing” words (something, anything) • Do NOT use first person! • Do NOT start sentences with “This” unless you follow it with a noun (This poem suggests vs. This suggests) • Do NOT drop quotes! BLEND them! • Spell out states and countries
