  1. Matter: States of Matter (Liquid)

  2. Liquids • Indefinite shape • Take the shape of the container • Particles are in close contact with each other, but the arrangement isn’t rigid or orderly --> flow • Definite volume • Almost incompressible

  3. Liquids • Vaporization- conversion of a liquid to a gas or vapor • Evaporation- when this occurs at the surface of a liquid that is notboiling

  4. Liquids • Boiling Point • A liquid boils at a temperature at which its vapor pressure is equal to the pressure of the gas above it. • The lower the pressure of a gas above a liquid, the lower the temperature at which the liquid will boil

  5. Liquids • Boiling point • As a liquid is heated, its vapor pressure increases until the vapor pressure equals the pressure of the gas above it. • Bubbles of vaporized liquid (i.e., gas) form within the bulk liquid and then rise to the surface where they burst and release the gas. (At the boiling temperature the vapor inside a bubble has enough pressure to keep the bubble from collapsing.) http://www.chem.purdue.edu/gchelp/liquids/boil.html

  6. Liquids Interesting to Note… • Normal bp of water = 100 oC • Denver = bp of water is 95 oC, since Denver is 1600 m above sea level and average atmospheric pressure is about 85.3 kPa

  7. Liquids • Viscosity • Resistance to flow • Rank the following from least viscous to most viscous. • Molasses • Water • Motor oil
