What is it? • HIFU which stands for High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound also known as FUS and HIFUS is a highly precise medical Procedure. • It is used for Destroying Pathogenic tissue rapidly.
Clinical HIFU procedures are basic Image-guided permit treatment which are done to plan and target the problem before applying therapeutic level of Ultrasound Energy. • MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is used to identify Tumors or Fibroids in the body before getting destroyed by the HIFU. • Ultrasonography is another method of creating an image by using reflection of High-Frequency sound waves. • MRI is used in Australia, The US, Canada, Israel, Europe, and all over Asia. • Ultrasonography is used in Italy, Spain, Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Russia, China, Romania, and Bulgaria. • As an acoustic wave is directed toward the tissue, part of the beam is absorbed and converted to heat. Due to the buildup of heat, the tissue is thermally coagulated and then it is thermally Ablated. Where/How do you use it?
Ways to Focus the Aim • Geometrically: With a lens or with a spherically curved transducer. • Electronically: Adjusting the relative phases of elements in an array of Transducers (a “Phase Array”). • Dynamically: Adjusting the electronic signals to the elements of a phased array. The beams can be steered to different locations.
High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound is often considered a promising technology within non-invasive or minimum invasive therapy segments of medical technology. • If the first HIFU treatment fails, the HIFU can be repeated. • HIFU is also an option to treat prostate cancer recurrence after radiation therapy failure. • HIFU is being researched more in depth so the side effects of cancer treatments could be reduced.
