  2. My Onion A Representation of my Public and Private Selves by Benjamin Jaekle

  3. Hey there!

  4. I’m Benjamin Jaekle, and this is a presentation about my public and private selves.

  5. Benjamin has obtained an Onion! This is an Onion, which is a great metaphor for dealing with how people present themselves interpersonally.

  6. Onions are made of layers that can be peeled away, just like the information we make available to others.

  7. The deeper we go into the Onion of my personality, the more intimate the information we see.

  8. Public Private My public self is comprised largely of the outer layers. My private self is comprised mainly of the inner layers.

  9. So why don’t we start by taking a closer look at the outer layer of this little dude?

  10. Benjamin inspects Onion! Pretty basic stuff on the outside. Male, 27 years old, white, geeky, studying game design, dashingly handsome.

  11. Benjamin peels Onion! You can get deeper than that pretty easily with my public self. Let’s peel a layer or two real quick and try again.

  12. Benjamin inspects Onion again! Click to hear one of my favorite songs: Now we see that I’m into rock and hiking, that I love to read, that I love to be outside or in front of a computer.

  14. My public self is pretty broad. You don’t really miss much, but there are bits of my self that I keep hidden away.

  15. Let’s hack this Onion open and check out my deeper private self.

  16. Watch your eyes. Onion juice stings!

  17. Benjamin chops Onion! HI-YA!

  18. Benjamin has obtained ½ an Onion! Now we can easily see my private self inside. These juicy bits here make me tick, but you might not ever see them.

  19. Let’s take a quick look – this is still my private self, after all, so I can’t give you the full tour!

  20. My private self includes items of my personality like my values, my religious agnosticism, and my fear of water.

  21. Public me is humorous and excitable, but I also have a lot of passion and thoughtfulness that aren’t evident to most.

  22. There’s some other stuff in here, too. Fears, anxieties, selfish things, desperate desires and so forth.

  23. I don’t think we know each other well enough, though. That’s part of knowing how much of myself to reveal.

  24. Anyway, that’s about all I can tell you about my Onion for now.

  25. I hope this presentation has allowed you to get to know me a little better, at least as far as our relationship allows.

  26. Maybe you’ll get to know me a little better someday!
