What is “Reading Fluency”? • The ability to read text accurately • You know the words • Mistakes are minimal • The ability to read text quickly • NOT Speed-reading • Good readers read quickly, but not too quickly • The ability to read with expression • Stop at punctuation, read so that others understand

  3. The Parts to Fluent Reading • Reading Accurately • Reading Quickly • Reading with Expression • When you are reading, you are reading how? • You are also reading how? • But you are also reading with what, everyone?

  4. Why is Reading Fluency Important? • Reading fluency is directly related to: • Reading comprehension • Independent reading • Work completion

  5. Fluency concept practice: • Hand out passage • Numbers on sides of passages • Underline unknown or difficult words • Demonstrate (teacher/student track) • Correct Words Per Minute (CWPM) • Whisper-read the passage (self, 2 times) • Graphing

  6. Partner behavior: • Partner behavior • Partnership practice • Underline any errors • Draw a line after last word • Reporting • “You read __________ words.” • “I heard ____________ errors.” • Discuss what you heard. Rule: NO ARGUING. wastes time to argue Be fair.

The 6 Minute Time Frame • 1 minute to get ready • 1 minute for Partner 1 to read • 1 minute for Partner 2 to report total words, errors, corrections and cwpm, Partner 1 records cwpm • 1 minute for Partner 2 to read • 1 minute for Partner 1 to report total words, errors, corrections and cwpm, Partner2 records cwpm • 1 minute for both partners to color graphs and put materials away

  8. Activity procedure • Working with a partner 6 minutes each day • Working Relationship-based on assessment

  9. While the reader is reading aloud for one minute, the fluency partner follows along and underlines any errors. When the timer sounds, the partner notes the last word read, then provides polite feedback. (Scripted!)

  10. You read _____ (total number of) words. I heard _____ (number of errors). • Point to each underlined word and pronounce it correctly for the reader. The reader repeats the word correctly • Reader records the cwpm on the Fluency Graph • Remember-----NO ARGUING
