Service-Learning: • Is beneficial to a community • Is coordinated between the college and the community • Helps foster civic responsibility • Part of an academic program that is enriched by the service element • Includes structured time for students to reflect on the service experience
Students Discover: • Internships • Careers • Academic achievement • Course concepts • Awareness of social needs
Students Gain: • Communication skills • Decision-making skills • Implementing programs and ideas • Time-management • Leadership skills • Responsibility • Human relations skills
Common Questions • Does service-learning take too much class time? • How do I evaluate the students’ performances? • What are the risks involved? • How does service-learning benefit me?
Class Time • You are still in charge • Reflection through writing • Discussion
Evaluating Student Performance • Don’t change, assume service is heightening student learning • Analysis and critical thinking papers • Outcomes through assessment
Risks Involved Risk Management • Ask for materials from your risk management professional • Discuss in class and create learning contracts
Service-Learning Benefits You • Research • Presentations • Publications • Direction
Institutional Benefits • Builds partnerships with local community • Extends campus resources into the community • Creates new areas for research which increase opportunities for recognition • Enriches teaching and learning
If you: Prove success through outcomes… It may: Bring more support to your department. Put institution on the cutting-edge ~ Marketing Bring outside dollars ~ Service-minded corporations will contribute through donations to the institution or department Results
Consult with service-learning department on campus if available Be creative ~ what type of service would work best with my course? Craft your course Seek grant dollars and additional resources for monetary and professional assistance (Indiana Campus Compact is a great place to begin, i.e. consultation and grant dollars).
