  2. If your Kindle was made in 2012 or before that, Amazon wants your device to be on the latest version of its software. If you missed the March 22 deadline to receive a wireless update, you'll need to update your device manually. Here's how It's just a day after March 22nd for the Kindle critical update. Early reports suggest that not everyone received Amazon's email, postcards, and phone calls about the update. If you're one of the Kindle owners who didn't get the update on time, don't panic. If you miss the deadline, you can still install the update. The process requires a computer, your Kindle, and a USB cable to connect the two. You should also fully charge your Kindle before you begin to make sure you have enough power to complete the process.

  4. First determine which model you have. The best way to do this is to map your Kindle to one of the models on this page. Then open the settings menu to determine the firmware. Then open the drop-down menu and select the "Device info" option. Find out which firmware version is currently running on your Kindle. If the firmware number matches one of the numbers on this help page, you already have the update. If you can't find your Kindle on this second page, you don't need the update at all.
