German Unification. 1815-1871. German Confederation. 39 German States The two largest states were Prussia and Austria- Hungary. Prussia dominated because it industrialized earlier and had the best army. Kaiser Wilhelm I. 1861 became the Prussian King. Fought with parliament.

  2. German Confederation • 39 German States • The two largest states were Prussia and Austria- Hungary. • Prussia dominated because it industrialized earlier and had the best army.

  3. Kaiser Wilhelm I • 1861 became the Prussian King. • Fought with parliament. • Used his power with the Junkers to appoint Otto von Bismark

  4. Otto von Bismark • Prime Minister of Prussia • Master of Realpolitik • First- form an alliance with Austria Hungary. • Second- go to war against Denmark • Third split the Schleswig and Holstein

  5. Bismarck’s Plan-Blood and Iron Seven Week’s War- Prussia Dominates- Controls Northern Germany Franco- Prussian War- Southern Germans were Catholic, but Bismarck felt that they might be convinced to join with the North if France attacked. Bismarck stirred up trouble with France by manipulating a telegram. The French were defeated and the King Wilhelm was crowned Kaiser.

  8. Emperor Mutsuhito1867-1912 • Shogun stepped down in 1867 starting the Meji Era. • Modernized Japan- modeled after The British Navy, The American Education System and Germany’s centralized government.

  9. Achievements of the Meji Era • Railroads- 7000 miles of track • Thousands of Factories • 21 million tons of Coal per year • Strongest military in Asia

  10. Sino-Japanese War • Sino -Japanese War(1894-1895) Japan uses an excuse to drive the Chinese out of Korea and begin invading Manchuria.

  11. Russo Japanese War • Russo-Japanese War(1904-1905) • Russia squabbles with Japan over Korea and Manchuria • Japan launches a sneak attack on the Russian Navy. • Theodore Roosevelt brokered the Treaty of Portsmouth. Japan came out on top.
