Information TechnologyUnit 1 Outcome 2: Networks Physical Design of a network People who develop & support networks
Physical Design of a network • Network diagrams • Networks in medium to large organisations can become very complex, with the number of devices that can connect throughout the premises. • Network diagrams use straight lines to represent cables, and icons are used to represent communications devices.
Developing a network • Networks are vital to the operation of most organisations. • When designing a network, it is paramount that a user’s needs are met and implemented. • A new network may need to be established or a significant change may need to be made to the existing network if the company’s goals are not currently being met.
Developing a network • Systems analyst • Role: to analyse the requirements of the organisation & its users, as well as design & develop new or improved information systems. • Systems/network programmer • Install & maintain software on the network • Technical specialists • Install & configure the communications devices, network hardware & communications channels
Supporting a network • Established networks require a number of professionals who are responsible for support & maintenance tasks. • These roles include: • Network Administrator • Network support technician • Help-desk support • Website developer
Activity • Page 90-91 has descriptions of each of the aforementioned roles. • You are required to read through these and summarise each role on the following slides.
Supporting a network • Network administrator
Supporting a network • Network support technician
Supporting a network • Help-desk support
Supporting a network • Website developer
Network documentation • A procedures manual should be prepared by the network administrator shortly after a network is built. • It should outline the steps required to operate, maintain & expand the network. • Procedures manuals are then used by the network administrator, network support techs, help-desk operator & visiting technical specialists, in order to help them perform maintenance tasks. • It should also include the following: • Description of techniques required for each procedure • Configuration information for the various devices & software on the network.
