Outcome 2 – Social Life • On completion of this unit the student should be able to analyse and discuss patterns of social life and the factors which influenced changes to social lifein the first half of the twentieth century. • How did life change for people (Jews and Germans) living in Nazi Germany?
Read the question • With reference to ‘The Boy in Striped Pyjamas’, class activities and independent research demonstrate your understanding of AT LEAST THREE features (from the ‘Seven Structures of Control’) of life in Nazi Germany. • For each ‘structure’ do you have a film reference and specific research references?
Be prepared • Did you: • Attend all or most classes in the weeks before the essay? • Read through the assessment criteriato know what was expected? • Complete the film questionsin the class discussion? • Complete the notes diagram for evidence of the ‘Seven Structures of Control’ in the film in the class activity? • Complete an essay plan with at least one reference to the film and at least two or three examples for each topicfrom credible research sources? • Use the online referencing toolor bibliography template, handed out at the start of the task, to credit your research sources? • Use all of your class time and at least 1 hour of homework? • Submit a draftessay for feedback?
Choosing research sources • Is it one of the many websites I included in handouts or posted on the Ultranetor Wikispace? • Is it one of the 21 books that were borrowed from the library? • Do you know who the author of your research source is? • Do they have an academic/history background (e.g. University lecturer)? • Is their organisation credible (i.e. Holocaust Museum vs dedicated Neo-Nazi Enthusiast)? • Is it Wikipedia? • Is it a blog?
During and after the essay • Did you arrive at class with: • Your essay plan neatly handwritten and with plenty of detail? • Your class activities and notesavailable to give you ideas for writing? • Your bibliographyfilled out so that you could refer to your research? • When writing your essay did you: • Read through each paragraph to check for errorsand repetiton? • Use all of the class time (double-lesson) that was available? • Make an effort to write in neat handwriting? • After writing the essay did you: • Read through your work to check for errorsand repetition?

Extended responses (2 of them) • Extended response (one page), choose one of: • a) Describe and analyse the historical events and actions that allowed Adolf Hitler to rise from being a struggling artist in 1910 to the dictator of Germany in 1933. • b) Describe and analyse how Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party gained and maintained total control of Nazi Germany in the years from 1933 to 1945. • Extended response (half-page) • a) Discuss the life and work of an artist from Germany during the period from 1919 to 1945. Analyse the historical events that influenced this artist and how the Nazi movement responded to their work. • You will be allowed a two-sided ‘cheat sheet’ for these responses only.
How to prepare • Review your test from Outcome 1 and your essayfrom Outcome 2. You will choose one extended response form either of these. Also review class activities. • Complete your poster for Outcome 3. This will directly relate to one of your extended responses. • Access the class Ultranet Space http://www.vcehistory-redcliffs.wikispaces.com/ for class PowerPoints, readings and websites. • Complete Lotus Charts to review what you have learnt about Nazi Germany throughout this semester. • Revision sheets are on their way!
