British Colonies • Mercantilism—economic system used by European nations to generate money • Natural resources harvested in colonies manufactured goods foreign markets, colonists $$$ • Money was earned and saved in this system—empires would not have to pay for these raw materials (savings), and they could make large sums of money by selling them (earnings)

British Colonies • Like the French, the British recognized the benefits for establishing colonies in Atlantic North America. They were motivated by: • Economics—$$$ to be made • Competition—with other European nations • Quality of Life—poor living conditions in many British cities • Religious freedom—many different branches of Christianity in Britain as opposed to France; many of different faith were punished/treated unfairly
British Colonies • King James I of England grants rights to establish colonies to private groups/individuals—saves the empire’s money, allows private investors to take most of the risk (and the gain) • Think Critically: How was this different from the way the French colonized North America?
