Working with Resistant Families IASCW Conference February2010
Resistant responses • Ambivalence • Avoidance • Confrontation • False compliance • Violence
Rationale for resistance • Poor previous experience of agencies • Lack of understanding about what is expected • Fear of being judged • Non acceptance of the definition of the problem • Fear of children being removed • Issues connected with individual worker; race, gender, attitude etc
Question 1 Why is this family resisting the input of “professionals”?
Question 2 What importance do I place on establishing a relationship with families?
Question 3 and 4! Do I feel competent in my interactions with this family?. How do my personal, emotional resources affect my performance?
What families want..(Rose and Aldgate 2000) • To be kept fully informed • To be treated with courtesy • To be involved in all stages of the process • Open and honest communication • An approach which reinforces rather than undermines their parenting capacity • Time with someone who listens, gives feedback and is reliable
What works? (Egan 1994) • Give practical, emotional support. • Be available, predictable and consistent • Explore own attitudes to working with resistant families • See some resistance and reluctance as normal • Establish a strong and well articulated relationship • Treat families as professionally as you do other team members
