Tasks Task 1. Choose a book written by a world author, following instructions Task 2. There will be 5 discussion days. On each discussion day you will turn in a Written Response, following instructions. Task 3. Research Project, following instructions (also, Task 4, not included in this presentation, is an essay)
Process Task 1: Choose a book • Choose a book by an author that is not from the United States or England that is also written about a foreign culture. Get your choice approved by your parent (have parent sign form) and your teacher. Create a group of at least 4 students to read the same book but I highly recommend 5 students or more. • Go to my web page/ World Literature/ World Authors and look at the Authors List. orAuthors List • Utilize all of your resources: your English teacher and the English Department's books, your social studies teacher, your foreign language teacher, your school librarian, a parent, the internet, or your local book store. Find something that YOU WANT TO READ!

Process Task 2: Written Reponses Have this ready to turn in at the beginning of each discussion day. This response is a reaction to what has been read, not a plot summary. The Written Response should be a page long. At some point in these 5 Written Responses, you will address each of the following topics at least once, including PAGE #s: • A reaction to what is happening in the novel • What you like or dislike about the characters • Questions you have • A list of new-to-you words with definitions • A connection to something in your life, the news, or another connection
Process Task 3: Research Project • You are allowed to use other formats, but consider creating a Google Documents Presentation (just like this one - CREATE NEW - presentation). Create a title page with your names, then create at least one page for each participant (label pages) and a citations page. • Determine who will find what. You may want to leave this undetermined for a while until you start reading the book. Label each page with a title. • Start researching, following instructions. • Collect quotes and images - store them in the presentation on your page. • Be certain to include citations of everything you find.
Research Project Ideas • How is this book inspired by historical events? Get specific - did the author read about it? Participate? What were the effects on the world/country/individuals? How does this context affect the book? • How is this book inspired by the author's background? Get specific. How does this context affect the book? Cultural/ Religious/ what else? • What reactions did this book receive when it was first published? Now? Do you agree with these reactions?
Research Project Ideas, cont. • Is your novel deserving of any awards it may have received? Should it have received another award? What are the criteria for these awards? What other types of books have received these awards? If no award, what award should exist that would be perfect for this book? • How are other works by the author similar or different? Make connections. • Does the author refer to a cultural event or custom? How does that reference affect the novel? • Any other research that is inspired by the novel.

Evaluation total= 110 points Task 1: on the start date have a group, at least one hard copy of book, and a group of people to read it Task 2: On discussion days, turn in a Written Response (incl. 5 types) and verbally contribute to discussion 60 points Task 3: Research Project. Individually label each slide in Google docs. Graded on relevance and interest of research, involvement of class in your presentation, original writing (meaning NOT cut and paste), citations, and use of time in lab. 50 points
Conclusion My overall goal in this World Authors project is to get you to READ and THINK! • What other types of cultures are out there? • What are you interested in reading about? • How can you contribute to a reading group? • How does others' thinking influence your thinking? • Where does your book come from or what does it suggest? • What is available on the internet for you to express your thinking?
