CHARLES DICKENS • Charles John Huffam Dickens (1812-70) was born in Portsmoth, in England. His family was extremely poor. The worst time for Dickens was when his father sent to prison and Dickens himself was sent, aged only 12 to work in a factory. He remembered his terrible time all his life, later wrote about it in his novel David Copperfield (1850). He then worked as a newspaper reporter and wrote his first novel, The Pickwick Papers, which was very popular.He wrote some successful stories again. He was now a well-known writer.

VOCABULARY • noble:someone of the highest social rank • citizen:someone who lives in a particular town, state, or country • innocent:someone who is innocent has not done anything wrong • revolution:when the people of a country change the political system completely, using force • landowner:someone who owns a large amount of land • revenge:when you hurt or punish someone because they have done something bad to you • guillotine:a piece of equipment used in the past to cut off criminals' heads • accuse:to say that someone has done something wrong or illegal
MAIN CHARACTERS • Mr.Lorry: English Banker, Family friend of Lucie • Lucie: Young beautiful lady • Charles Darnay: French nobleman. • Sydney Carton: A lawyer • Dr.Manette: Doctor and Lucie’s father • Mr.Defarge: Doctor’s old friend and very popular around French citizens
The Road to Paris-1775 • Mr.Lorry brought Lucie from France to England when she was a baby. • Lucie’s father had been in prison for eighteen years in Paris. However he was innocent. • Mr.Lorry and Lucie went to Paris for Dr. Manette(Lucie’s father) • They met with Mr.Defarge.Defarge helped them and they brought poor old man Dr.Manette to England.
A Trial in London-1780 • Some people claimed that Charles Darney was a French spy. • Lucie was witness and Carton was his lawyer. • Carton was a skillful lawyer… • FINAL DECISION: NOT GUILTY • Important point: Darney and Carton were similar.
Two Men Speak of Love • Darnay and Carton fell in love with Lucie. • Carton knew that he had some bad habits and he wasn’t suitable for her. • Darnay married Lucie.
Stormy Years in France Reasons of Revolution • Rich and strong rebelmen were torturing and insulting their people. Landowners and noblemen were cruel. • In France there were a king and queen, but they didn’t care about citizens of France. • People of France were poor, hungry and unhappy. • People didn’t have any right. • For noblemen, people and animals were not different. • As a result, people wanted the REVENGE!!!

Stormy Years in France Results • The citizens of France had fought to win power and now they used it. • Rich and powerful noblemen, king, innocent people died. • Their heads cut off by that terrible machine of death: The Guillotine
A Call For Help • Life was good for Darney and his wife Lucie in London. • Darnay was French nobelman and his old servant called him for help. • Darnay left his rank in France, but he wanted to save his old servant. • Darnay went to Paris, where is dangerous place… As a Result • There wasn’t any rule in Paris, so citizens took him into the prison
In The Hands of Citizens • Lucie, Mr.Lorry and Dr.Manette went to save Darney. • Because of his old years in prison Dr.Manette was popular • He was able to save him. • However, Defarge was very popular because of his role in Revolution and he accused him. • Darney was arrested again.
The Spy • Carton went to Paris after Lucie. • He caught a spy. • The spy was familiar… • Carton learned that, the spy worked for King of France and citizens of France. • The spy obeyed Carton.
A Change of Clothes • Darlay didn’t have any hope for his life, because citizens would kill him by the guillotine. • Carton came the prison with spy. • They couldn’t escape, because the number should be fifty-two • Carton convinced Darlay for changing clothes and their places. • Carton stayed in prison instead of Darlay.
The Last Goodbyes • Mr.Lorry, Mr.Manette, Lucie and Darnay went Paris by coach. • They couldn’t forget Carton. • Carton died for his love…
In My Opinion • The story is very attractive. • Writer used his knowledge of history. • He described people’s behaviours very well while The French Revolution was happening
