  2. Many English words have Latin roots. Knowing the meanings of these roots can help you figure out the pronunciation and meaning of many words. Look at these words and listen to me read them out loud: audio audience What letters are the same in both words? Did you say “audio” is the same in both words? Audio is a Latin root meaning “to hear”

  3. Look at this word and listen to me read it out loud: contradiction dict is a Latin root that means “to say or speak”. Breaking this word into its parts can help you determine its meaning. Contradiction begins with the prefixcontra-; it contains the Latin root dict; it ends with the common suffix –ion. You can put these parts together to read the whole word: contradiction.

  4. Look at the chart below. With your partner decode the words in the column labeled, Words, by identifying the Latin root, pronouncing each root syllable and reading the entire word.

  5. Independent Practice Look through your social studies book for 5 other examples of words with Latin roots. Write each example you find in your journal, and circle or underline the Latin root.
