Geography of Japan • Japan is an archipelago, made of four islands. • The islands are Honshu, Kyushu, Hokkaido, and Shikoku

Few natural resources • Only about 25% of Japan’s land is arable, which means suitable for farming. The soil is not very rich. • The other 75% is forest-covered mountains • Japan lacks mineral resources, like iron or copper
Climate • Japan is temperate, meaning it has four seasons
Diet • The Japanese eat a lot of fish, prepared in various ways, like sushi. • Rice is also a staple of their diet.
Beliefs • The Japanese are Shinto and Buddhist. • Japanese also believe in filial piety. There are several holidays devoted to ancestor worship. • Until 1945, the Emperor was considered a deity. • The same dynasty, the same royal family, has ruled Japan for ever.
Government • Japan has a constitutional monarchy. • They have a prime minister. • And their legislature is called the Diet.
Shinzo Abe • During World War II, because Japan has no natural resources and is sometimes ethnocentric, Japan invaded China, Indonesia, Korea, Vietnam, etc. • The Japanese arm,y killed many civilians • Shinzo Abe is the current Prime Minister; he is • Rebuilding Japan’s army; • Claiming certain islands in the Pacific, which annoys China; • Saying that other countries are unfairly maligning Japan about the Second World War.
Economy • The United States’ GDP: 14 trillion dollars • Japan’s GDP: 5 trillion dollars • Japan’s economy was the second largest until three years ago
Economy, continued • Japan is home to international companies like: Toyota , Honda, Nissan ,Sony, Canon, and Mitsubishi
School • Japanese students go to school Monday through Saturday, 8 to 4. • When they are applying to get into high school or university, they attend after school programs called juku until 9 or 10 at night. • Students also clean the school on Saturday
Language • Three “alphabets” • Hiragana – 46 sounds • Katakana – 46 sounds; to represent foreign words • Kanji – Chinese characters; there are 8,000 of them
Cities • Tokyo is the largest city in Japan. • Its population is 13 million people. • It has very modern transportation systems
Houses • When you are eating, you normally sit on the floor. • You sleep on a futon, which you fold up and put away in a closet. • Rooms are connected with shoji • The floors are covered in tatami mats. • Japanese don’t wear shoes indoors.
