Welcome to the Virtual Resource Classroom Jennifer Chwialkowski and Maria Carr
Overview of Special Education Services in Online Learning • The provision of FAPE should be the primary consideration when deciding whether a student’s needs can be met in a virtual environment. • Virtual education does not always meet the needs of each student and the individual needs must be considered. • Questions to ask when considering whether FAPE could be provided via this method: • Can student’s specific needs and disability be supported? Areas to consider are student’s age, maturity, attention span, and behavioral components as well as their academic/cognitive functioning. • Can annual IEP goals be supported with this format? Progress on annual IEP goals is the hallmark of whether FAPE is being provided. • Consideration of a hybrid model for some students could include some in person support combined with online support.
When and How to Use an Online Learning Environment for Special Education Students • When: It should be used WHEN it can meet the needs of the individual student. It should not be a categorical decision. • How: • Speech therapy and Specialized Academic Instruction can be used to address needs with Elluminate and/or online speech therapy (see resource links) • Should be synchronous versus asynchronous. • Small group or individual • With small group, you may consider the use of an “aide” to walk around the virtual classroom “breakout rooms” • Individual Transition goals can be worked on via elluminate. • Depending on the age and the goals being addressed, individual sessions and/or group sessions can be provided.
Jessica is a 7th grade special education student at the local charter school. She loves meeting with her Resource Teacher once a week in her online classroom.
Jessica has 2 IEP Goals Language: Jessica will monitor expository text using word, sentence and paragraph clues to determine meaning of unknown words with 80% accuracy in 4 of 4 trials as measured by teacher-generated assessment. Math: when given a teacher-made chart that shows the terminology, steps, and process for solving a single and multi-step addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problem, Jessica will identify key terms and apply steps to solve word problems with 80% accuracy in 4 of 4 trials as measured by work samples or rubric.
As Jessica’s Virtual RSP Teacher, how can I create a virtual lesson that will help her meet her IEP goals?
15 Minute Rule Approximately every 15 minutes use a different instructional strategy to support the objective of the lesson.
