Nobles- duties • Send help to vassals • Couldn’t cheat or punish for no reason- if does then vassal breaks all ties • Build castles for defense • Word was law • Resolved disputes, punish misbehavior, collect taxes
Vassals-duties • Fight during war • Give money on special occasions • Give food and shelter when noble visits
Feudal system • Created by Franks • Spread throughout Europe • 1000 William- duke of Normandy • 1066- invade England • Defeat English at Battle of Hastings • Became King of England • Brought feudalism
Feudal system • Live on manors which include forest, farmlands, meadows, village, church and castle • Noble – vassal of king- give loyalty and perform services in return for land- sent soldiers to fight in king’s army and collected taxes. Could have vassals of their own. • Peasants (serfs)- live and work on land. Couldn’t leave without noble’s permission. Pay rent in the form of goods and services in return for the noble’s protection. • Workers- trade goods to lords and peasants in exchange for food.
Women • Few rights • Obey fathers or husbands • Ran household, supervise servants • Govern manor when husband gone • Seen as property (chattel) • Eleanor of Aquitaine- great political power
Towns and trade • After 1000- towns grow • Food increased due to plow and horse collar • Population increased • Trade increased
