ISMS The Seven ISMs: • Racism • Sexism • Ageism • Classism • Ableism • Heterosexism (Homophobia) • Faith as an Ism
Key Terms Stereotype: False/generalized beliefs about a group; categorizing members without regard for individual difference Ex. Jewish people are all greedy and misers Prejudice: Preconceived opinions, attitudes and feelings that unfairly cast a group in a negative light without legitimate reason Ex. All brown people have no manners
Key Terms Discrimination: Unfairactions against people because of their race, religion, gender, language, faith or sexual orientation Ex. You don’t hire someone because she is a woman or a Sikh or a lesbian… Systemic Discrimination: Systems that favour some groups over others in terms of hiring, pay, promotions, etc.
Racism • The theory that distinctive human characteristics and abilities are determined by race • Discrimination based on one’s skin colour • Ex. All white people are rednecks
Classism • Is a prejudice or discrimination on the basis of one’s socio-economic standing • Ex. Hinduism’s class system
Sexism • Belief or attitude that one sex is inherently superior to, more competent than, or more valuable than the other sex • Discrimination based on gender • Ex. Chauvinism • Ex. Not hiring a woman because you know she will have babies and leave her job for a few years
Ableism • Form of discrimination against people who have disabilities • Ex. Not hiring a woman based on her physical disability, when otherwise she is the most suitable for the job
Heterosexism(Homophobia) • Heterosexism: prejudice and antagonism shown by heterosexual persons towards homosexuals; discrimination against homosexuals • Assumes everyone is heterosexual • The assumption that only heterosexual relationships are normal and should therefore be privileged • Homophobia: ‘hatred and fear of homosexuals and homosexuality, usually associated with hostility and sometimes with violence’ • Ex. Not allowing a gay student on a basketball team because they are gay
Ageism • Cultural prescribed set of norms about people and their behaviour at different stages in the life course • Ages include: Childhood, Teenage, Middle-age and Old age, which are culturally defined • Looks at old-age • Ex. Not hiring a person because they are older and will not stay at the company long or may be slower
Faith as an Ism • The cultural, institutional and individual set of practices and beliefs that assign differential value to people according to their religion or their lack of religion • Ex. Scientology is the most supreme faith in the world and everything else is wrong
