  2. Liberalism • What is “liberalism”? • Broadly speaking, liberalism emphasizes individual rights. It seeks a society characterized by freedom of thought for individuals, limitations on power (especially of government and religion), the rule of law, the free exchange of ideas, a market economy that supports free private enterprise, and a transparentsystem of government in which the rights of all citizens are protected. (Wikipedia) • In modern society, liberals favor a liberal democracy with open and fair elections, where all citizens have equal rights by law and an equal opportunity to succeed. (Wikipedia)

Liberalism Cont’d • grew out of Enlightenment & Fr Rev • all about making society more open • examples: • electoral expansion • constitutional government • freedom of the press • disestablishment of church-state relationship • perfect for rising middle class • triumphant in Britain because elites voluntarily enacted reforms

Nationalism • What is “nationalism”? • A strong feeling of pride in and devotion to one’s country (World History, Prentice Hall) • The term “nationalism” is generally used to describe two phenomena: (1) the attitude that the members of a nation have when they care about their national identity and (2) the actions that the members of a nation take when seeking to achieve (or sustain) self-determination.
